MCRB Submits Input to OHCHR on the Right to Privacy in the Digital Age

MCRB has made an input into a report on the right to privacy in the digital age which is being undertaken by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. MCRB’s inputs reflect its experience of working on digital rights in Myanmar since 2014, with a particular focus on the right to privacy. This experience began with the undertaking of a Sector-Wide ImpactAssessment on ICT in Myanmar, published in 2015, and were further developed in multi-stakeholder discussions including in the 4 sessions of the Myanmar DigitalRights Forum (MDRF) held between 2016 and 2020.

MCRB has approached this input to the UN OHCHR from the perspective of responsible business and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).  It covers:

  • Lack of human rights safeguards in the legal framework

  • Low digital literacy and privacy awareness and practices amongst government and the public

  • Digital ID cards, Biometrics, and SIM Card Registration

  • Additional privacy-related human rights risks since 1 February 2021

It complements a recent input which MCRB made to the UN OHCHR on the application of the UNGPs to the tech sector.
