MCRB, together with Peace Nexus, International Alert and MCRB’s partner, Myanmar Business Coalition on Aid (MBCA), held a training workshop on responsible business on July 27-28 in Myawadi.

Around 25 participants included business representatives from timber production, farming, construction, local CSOs and Karen ethnic armed organisations.

From 7-10 August, MCRB (Vicky Bowman and MCRB Programme Associate Thein Than Htay) also gave talks on responsible business to faculty and students at Mandalay University, including the Executive Masters in Public Administration of Meiktila University which is based in Mandalay, Yadanapon University and Mandalay Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MRCCI).

University participants were studying anthropology, history, archaeology, geology, law and public administration. These talks were undertaken with support from Nagata Advertising Agency of Japan which has also arranged the installation of sponsored litter bins in Bagan and several campuses and downtown areas and tourist destinations in Mandalay.

Discussions covered responsible business 101, transparency, anti-corruption, indigenous people and other business and human rights issues.

The talks included an opportunity for participants to vote to identify the most challenging sectors to do business responsibly. Participants at the Chamber identified manufacturing and agriculture. Yadanbon University faculty were particularly concerned by agriculture, including overuse of fertiliser and pesticide, as well as food safety.

Chamber participants identified the complexity of laws and regulations and increased costs for businesses as reasons why businesses fail to be responsible. Impacts on the right to health was identified as the most significant negative impact of irresponsible business activity.
