MCRB’s Programme and Communication Officer Phyu Phyu Zin participated in the regional conference on “Fast-tracking Implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) for Economic and Social Development in Southeast Asia”.

The purpose of the conference was to build and foster partnerships as well as to create a regional platform to fast track the implementation in support of Sustainable Development Goal 16 in Southeast Asia.

The conference was attended by representatives from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), government and private sectors from eight Southeast Asian countries. Participants discussed ways of tackling corruption, good practice and the challenges they face. They also shared examples of successful undertakings in their respective countries.

Phyu Phyu Zin talked about the situation in Myanmar, government policies and challenges the country faces. She also introduced MCRB’s Transparency in Myanmar Enterprise (TiME)/ Pwin Thit Sa Report, which attracted a lot of attention from other representatives. Thai NGO, Thaihonest, discussed possibilities of applying the same system of scoring for Thai companies.

By the end of the conference, representatives of CSOs from eight countries attending the regional conference agreed on the proposals for action by states acting at three levels: ASEAN, national and for CSOs and journalists. Government representatives agreed to issue a joint statement later.

MCRB is interested in hearing from companies, international organisations and civil society who are interested in combating corruption, to build a network.
